East Street Market Refurbishment London Borough of Southwark

BRAC Contracts were appointed by London Borough of Southwark to complete the refurbishment of 12 shopfronts at the historic East Street Market.

Renowned architects, We Made That completed a series of graphic and physical interventions to rejuvenate East Street Market – one of the oldest markets in London having existed in one form or the other since the 16th century. We paid careful attention to ensure that we paid homage to the past of East Street to make sure that it benefitted from the transformations in a way that celebrate Walworth’s unique character.

We were drawn to the project by it’s multi-headed approach of needing to tackle the poor condition of the physical environment whilst still supporting existing businesses, local stakeholders and market traders.

Refreshing a Community

Improved entrances, new market stalls, new power infrastructure, public furniture and shop front improvements now provide a new backdrop to this bustling market. Working with Maddison Graphic, We Made That has produced a renewed identity that has refreshed enthusiasm for this “old market with new ideas”. The market is now growing once again and attracting new traders.

What Walmorth Wants

The project was identified in a strategy developed by We Made That and local stakeholders called ‘What Walworth Wants’ whereby we ensured that our expertise in managing the relationship with the individual Shopkeepers and reporting regularly to the Council’s Project Officer’s for Regeneration South.
